Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week starts today and fashion addicts around the globe could not be happier. I’ve been covering New York Fashion Week for several years and continue to look forward to it every season. NYFW takes place twice a year at Lincoln Center in Manhattan. It draws the most interesting crowds season after season and no matter who you encounter you are bound to have a larger- than- life experience. Of course, it’s New York!
1. CELEBRITIES
Coming face to face with entertainment, film and media’s biggest names is common place at NYFW. As I said earlier, NYFW draws a very interesting mix of people: stylists, buyers, bloggers and front- row sitting celebs. While some of them do sneak in through the back door many use the same entrance, hang out in the same lounges and eat at the same restaurants “less famous” fashion week goers frequent. So keep your phone cameras ready at all times for that paparazzi moment.
2. FREEBIES
If you like free stuff, you will be served: food, drinks, fashion accessories, beauty products, magazines and fragrances are there for the taking. The freebies are everywhere: on the fashion show seats, in the lounges and even outside on the street. Brands take advantage of the high foot traffic going to and from Lincoln Center to promote their products at low cost. You’ll want to bring an extra bag to gather your treasures.
3. FABULOUSITY
From the fashion to the beauty to the hair everything on the NYFW runway is simply fabulous at the exception of a few mishaps, of course. For the most part NYFW sets the standard for what we will wear on our bodies, faces and heads for the months to come. Unfortunately, watching fashion shows on TV or reading about them in magazines doesn’t really do justice to the work and details going into creating each look. That’s why attending the shows and sometimes getting a sneak peek backstage is one of the many highlights of my work.
4. PAPARAZZI & STREET STYLE
Over the past few years, fashion week has evolved into a real peacock show. So you can expect to see people dressed-to-impress both on and off the runway! Thanks to photographers and bloggers like The Sartorialist, Garance Doré and Tommy Ton street style fashion has become just as important as the fashion shows. It has even overshadowed it.
5. EXCITEMENT
There is an indescribable buzz in the air at NYFW! Everyone is excited to see what the designers have dreamed up for the season. The frenzy also comes from being in a room filled with talented, creative and like minded people who have one thing in common: their love for fashion. It’s an exhilarating experience that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime!
Nothing can truly prepare you for what you are going to encounter. Consider yourself warned!
