MALORIE URBANOVITCH presented her Fall / Winter 2014 collection at World Master Card Fashion Week. I’ve included pictures of the entire collection as well as a sample from the interview I did with the designer below.

Malorie Urbanovitch is a ready-to-wear contemporary line for women. It was created by namesake designer, Malorie Urbanovitch and is at its 8th season. In 2012, Urbanovitch won the Mercedes-Benz Start Up competition with fellow female designer, Cécile Raizonville designer of Matière Noire. After this win she was named World Master Card Fashion Week’s “Top Newcomer” by the Globe and Mail.

As you will read below, Urbanovitch is passionate about ethical fashion and humane production practices that respect people and animals. Here is what she showed.

F.W.A.C.: What was the inspiration behind the collection and the different textures you used?

M.U.: I was inspired by Canadian winter and what women really want to wear during the cold climate. All of these textures are really soft and comfortable. I used very luxurious fabrics like alpaca, baby llama and merino wool. Everything is super cozy. I started from there and it kinda took on a 90’s feel and a bit of the 70’s too.

F.W.A.C.: Who is the Malorie Urbanovitch customer?

M.U.: Well you know, I kinda design for myself – a fantasy self, you know, what I would wear if I was super fabulous everyday. I have a lot of friends who are young, beautiful and ladies who are a bit more mature. I try to find a balance between the young and more mature fashion.

F.W.A.C.: Mercedes-Benz Start Up is a big deal! How did it change the way you do things, your life, or did it change anything at all?

M.U.: It totally changed my life! I mean, having the opportunity to show at World Master Card Fashion Week and this is like my third time, but this is the first time with a full collection so I feel like it’s really my debut. And just to have this opportunity is out of this world for me. The team they put together and all the hard work they put in, the media, the press, and preparation for the show. I could not ask for anything more.

F.W.A.C.: Any challenges?

M.U.: Making the collection. It’s always tough for me. I mean, it comes naturally but I wanted this to be a really big deal. I wanted to surprise and impress them. So the hardest thing was making sure that each piece was special, beautiful and I was proud to show it.

F.W.A.C.: Do you have a cause that is dear to your heart?

M.U.:  Ethical fashion is really important to me especially when it comes to animals. The factories that we use are all very humane and I try to source all of my fabrics and all of my yarns from places that have that same mantra and don’t want to harm anyone.

F.W.A.C.: That’s exactly what we are all about at Fashion with a Conscience!
