Summer Tips for Glowing, Healthy Looking Skin

By Mika Holborow of www.mika-makeup.com, Beauty Contributor

For those among us who are blessed with combination to oily skin, achieving glowing skin is hardly a challenge to achieve. Naturally oily skins always have a radiant glow that demands no manipulation to get right!

However, for the rest of us, with our dry and occasionally patchy skin, trying to achieve that perfectly highlighted luminosity to our faces can sometimes feel like an adventure not worth embarking on in the first place.  But what’s worth noting here is that ultimately no amount of beauty products that dwell on the skin’s surface can truly mirror glowing healthy skin without giving our natural skin a little bit of love.

bioderm1. MOISTURIZE

With that said, let’s look at the nature of our skin: Healthy skin is usually associated with hydrated skin; the beautiful appearance of skin that doesn’t look dry or feel itchy or uncomfortable, which boasts an even tone and texture.  Hydration is water, so on top of drinking the recommended 8 glasses a day, it’s worth investing in products that draw moisture towards the skin’s surface, a key ingredient here being a humectant. It’s also worth re-examining your current skin care routine – quite often using harsh and abrasive cleansers can actually strip your skin further of the moisture we want to retain.  Try switching to a soap free cleanser such as Bioderma Solution Micellaire.

I’ve been using this non-stop for about 5 years and I physically feel itchy and dry if I don’t have it on hand!

For day creams I love and obsess over La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume AP. I slather this on, all over my body and all over my face – at 7 months pregnant my belly gets a healthy coating to prevent dryness and my face is equally well coated! With no parabens and no fragrance it’s guilt-free pleasure!

So on to the “glowing” part of our quest…….

2. EXFOLIATE

Glowing skin is skin which has an appropriate amount of shine or gloss on the surface, preluding to skin that is well moisturized and retains natural oils. For skin to appear glowing it’s imperative that skin is exfoliated so that the renewed skin has a chance to shine. Exfoliation is the friendly little helper that removes the dead skin cells that remain on the surface of the face (pleasant-sounding isn’t it)! Every 28 to 45 days our skin cells renew, growing new cells at the deepest layer which gradually die as they reach the surface.  The look of flaky or dry areas on the face are clear indicators that we need some help from a bottle.  As a makeup artist, I often rely on Aveda Botanical Kinetics Exfoliant – it’s super easy for travel since you don’t need to rinse your face after and is excellent at removing flakiness.

3. UP YOUR MAKE UP

I have recently tried and loved Josie Maran Argan Oil, an all natural 100% pure argan oil (straight from the tree)! Why not try adding a couple of drops to your foundation before applying to add even more luminosity to your finished look .

beccaMy fail safe for adding glow is no doubt Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector. Coming in 4 different colours for skins that are the fairest to the darkest, packed with vitamins and avocado oil yet also super lightweight on the skin. A bottle lasts forever and it’s perfect for adding a pearlised glow on cheekbones, nose, and cupids bow.

4. SMILE

With these products you will be sure to achieve gorgeous summer skin, so the last step is to SMILE! Smiling always makes us look healthier, happier and glowing.
