Welcome to the 2nd post on my ongoing journey.\u00c2\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.fashionwithaconscience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/butterfly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-2858\" src=\"http:\/\/www.fashionwithaconscience.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/butterfly.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"417\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So as I mentioned in my <a title=\"previous post\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fashionwithaconscience.org\/2012\/05\/03\/getting-to-know-me-in-the-beginning-there-was-no-lupus\/\">previous post<\/a> almost two years ago, at\u00c2\u00a0the age of 28,\u00c2\u00a0I was diagnosed with Lupus.\u00c2\u00a0<a title=\"Lupus\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fashionwithaconscience.org\/2012\/05\/04\/so-what-is-lupus\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Lupus<\/a> is an auto-immune disease where the body sees its own cells as foreign cells and starts to attack and \u00c2\u00a0kill them.\u00c2\u00a0 This leads to the deterioration of that system. It can attack any system in the body, but it usually goes after the skin, hair, bones, kidneys, muscles, and heart.\u00c2\u00a0 In my case it first manifested itself on my skin.\u00c2\u00a0 Which now looking back was both a\u00c2\u00a0good and bad thing.\u00c2\u00a0 Bad of course because it ruined my skin and left it with deep large discolored marks, good because it is what helped doctors identify it so quickly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My 28th year of life was supposed to be one of growth, fun, and love.\u00c2\u00a0I was about to complete my first year of graduate school and I absolutely loved it.\u00c2\u00a0 I was dating\/seeing etc a man named, we&#8217;ll call him\u00c2\u00a0Z.\u00c2\u00a0 He certainly was not the one but we had great chemistry together and were very attracted to each other.\u00c2\u00a0 I think that was one of the reasons why I continued to see him, he was only supposed to be a filler until the\u00c2\u00a0right guy came.\u00c2\u00a0 Anyway as a part of my growth and fun I took a solo trip to the Dominican Republic where I soaked up the sun, food, and hospitality of the people.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0I can&#8217;t go into detail about what happened on my trip because like Vegas what happens there stays there.\u00c2\u00a0 A\u00c2\u00a0couple of weeks after my trip I noticed that I started to develop a rash that was all over my hands, and on both of my eyelids.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0My skin on my hands started get extremely dry, it was peeling and developing bumps.\u00c2\u00a0 I let it go for a few weeks thinking that this was an allergic reaction to something.\u00c2\u00a0 I was most concerned with the rashes on my face for obvious reasons, it was a raised rash that had a very deep purple\/reddish tone.\u00c2\u00a0 The women at my hair salon told me to put some sort of\u00c2\u00a0 astringent that they used in the islands.\u00c2\u00a0 It had a strong smell and burned like hell, but it didn&#8217;t take away the rashes on my eyelids that were now developing\u00c2\u00a0all over my face.\u00c2\u00a0 After nothing was working and I\u00c2\u00a0had accused the woman who threaded my eyebrows of unsafe and unclean practices, I\u00c2\u00a0made an appointment at\u00c2\u00a0a dermatologist office.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She was\u00c2\u00a0my friend&#8217;s cousin so I thought that I was in pretty good hands.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0However, I should have gotten an indication of what kind of care I was\u00c2\u00a0going to receive by the look of\u00c2\u00a0the\u00c2\u00a0waiting room.\u00c2\u00a0 It was gray, had metal chairs, and one\u00c2\u00a0generic skin ad on the wall.\u00c2\u00a0 It kind of reminded me of the rooms in an\u00c2\u00a0insane asylum.\u00c2\u00a0 I shook off the weird feeling and helped myself to\u00c2\u00a0three travel size lotions that were\u00c2\u00a0sitting next to me in a tray.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 At this point the rash was on both of my eyelids, my cheeks, and hands.\u00c2\u00a0 When my name finally got called to see the doctor, I was unsure of what she would say, but I was confident that it was nothing more than\u00c2\u00a0an\u00c2\u00a0ugly allergic\u00c2\u00a0reaction.\u00c2\u00a0 When I removed the makeup I was wearing to cover up the rashes\u00c2\u00a0the doctor took one look at me and said, &#8220;Oh that looks like Lupus.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 She said it so nonchalantly as if I had\u00c2\u00a0a zit.\u00c2\u00a0 I was shocked\u00c2\u00a0and just started crying right there in the middle of her office.\u00c2\u00a0 I was crying because the only image I have had of Lupus up until that point was\u00c2\u00a0one of my best\u00c2\u00a0friend&#8217;s friend.\u00c2\u00a0 Who had\u00c2\u00a0 Lupus since we were in college and now at the age of 30 she was living in a hospital with a failed kidney transplant and three hip replacements.\u00c2\u00a0 When the doctor realized\u00c2\u00a0how her unsympathetic delivery of the news hit me she\u00c2\u00a0started to back track.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;You\u00c2\u00a0know this could really be anything, it&#8217;s unlikely that it is Lupus, why don&#8217;t we take some blood\u00c2\u00a0tests and a skin biopsy, I am sure\u00c2\u00a0it&#8217;s nothing&#8221;, she re-stated.\u00c2\u00a0 &#8220;Yeah,&#8221; I thought, &#8220;you should have started with that.&#8221; I was still shaking and crying as she wrote out an order for me to get a blood test at a lab.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Her bedside manner improved when she took the biopsy of the dried flaky skin on my arm that didn&#8217;t look anything like\u00c2\u00a0what\u00c2\u00a0was going on on my face.\u00c2\u00a0 Her nurse held my hand as I cried while the doctor\u00c2\u00a0snipped a piece of my arm off for the biopsy.\u00c2\u00a0 I gathered myself in the bathroom and re-applied my makeup.\u00c2\u00a0 I thanked the receptionist and when I walked out of the office\u00c2\u00a0I began to cry uncontrollably.\u00c2\u00a0 I was paralyzed from the appointment and was not even aware of what was going on around me.\u00c2\u00a0 I called my mom, who was more upset than I was at my doctor&#8217;s appointment.\u00c2\u00a0 She told me in her\u00c2\u00a0deep Nigerian accent that, &#8220;No such thing is\u00c2\u00a0in my family and if that woman were half of a\u00c2\u00a0doctor she would know that.&#8221;\u00c2\u00a0 In the midst of my tears and worry I smiled to myself because\u00c2\u00a0only my mother would make an\u00c2\u00a0insult that made no sense, but would make you believe that she was right.\u00c2\u00a0 She told me to pray and\u00c2\u00a0not to worry about it anymore.\u00c2\u00a0 I then called my older brother one for his pity and two because he hadn&#8217;t called me back in a week and I wanted him to kind of feel bad for not doing\u00c2\u00a0so.\u00c2\u00a0 He, like my mother, re-assured me that it was definitely not Lupus and that I had nothing to worry about.\u00c2\u00a0 I hung up the phone feeling a little better but I still needed a hug, and unfortunately\u00c2\u00a0neither my oldest brother or my mom were\u00c2\u00a0able to do that since they both lived in another state.\u00c2\u00a0 So I called the only family I had in the city, my brother Uche and asked him to meet me in Union Square where I had stayed after the doctor&#8217;s appointment.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He met up with me\u00c2\u00a0within 20 minutes and listened to my experience and what had been going on with me.\u00c2\u00a0 He gave me the hug I needed when I started to talk about my pre-mature diagnosis of Lupus and what I had heard about\u00c2\u00a0the disease through my best friend.\u00c2\u00a0 He told me not to worry and that it wouldn&#8217;t help me at all, we\u00c2\u00a0sat and\u00c2\u00a0talked and he called one of his\u00c2\u00a0friends who is a doctor to ask her about\u00c2\u00a0Lupus.\u00c2\u00a0 After 2 hours of talking and watching\u00c2\u00a0the diversity of people in Union Square we\u00c2\u00a0went our separate ways and I felt calmer about the situation.\u00c2\u00a0 This calm lasted for\u00c2\u00a0as long as my 30 min ride home.\u00c2\u00a0 Then the crazy started&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>My name is Nono Osuji and in\u00c2\u00a0Skin Struggles\u00c2\u00a0I recount my personal experience and struggle with Lupus.
